Eguavoen: I’m going back to my job as NFF Technical Director

Austin Eguavoen says he has finished his job as interim coach of the Super Eagles and will be returning to his role as Nigeria Football Federation, NFF’s technical director.

The former Nigeria international defender was drafted to take charge of the two opening games of the 2025 African Nations Cup qualifying games against the Cheetahs of Republic and the Amavubi of Rwanda after German, Bruno Labbadia suddenly pulled out of an agreement with the NFF to succeed Finidi George as Super Eagles head coach.

Eguavoen won four points in the two games to ensure Nigeria stay top of their qualifying group with four points in two games, one above the Cheethahs who came from behind to defeat Libya 2-1 in Abidjan, and the former Nigeria captain is now returning to his substantive job with the NFF.

‘I had two games mandate, and I’m done. I’m going back to my job as NFF Technical Director,’ he said after the goalless draw with the Amavubi of Rwanda in Kigali Tuesday afternoon. Matchday three and four of the qualifiers will hold in October and Cerezo, as Eguavoen is fondly called might return if the NFF fails to find a permanent coach for the Super Eagles.
