Eguavoen: ‘Our objective is to pick the six points on offer against Benin and Rwanda’
The Super Eagles will be returning to action on Saturday in an African Nations Cup qualifier against Republic of Benin after a disappointing run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup led the team to winning just one point out of six in June.
The Nigerians drew with South Africa in Uyo and lost for the first time ever to the Cheetahs of Republic of Benin in their second game of a miserable run in the World Cup qualifiers which had seen them draw their opening two games before the matches in June.
Interim manager of the team, Austin Equavoen is not worried about the team’s unimpressive run to the AFCON qualifiers but remains bullish about the team’s chances as the Super Eagles are returning with a mission to correct their mistakes and make Nigerians happy again.
“Our objective is clear — to pick the six points in both matches. The players know this, and are committed to accomplishing this. The matches will not be easy.
No qualifying game can be taken for granted because all the teams want to play in the finals. However, we have spoken to the players and all of us are on the same page,” Eguavoen told ESPN.
Eguavoen insists that the motivation for victory has nothing to do with revenge.
“Nobody is mentioning anything about revenge. Our goal is three points, and then we aim for another three points in Kigali on Tuesday that will put us in good stead for qualification,” Eguavoen said.
