Egypt wrapped up their AFCON preparations with a morale‑boosting 2–1 victory over Nigeria in Cairo, delivering a performance that will please Rui Vitória just days before the tournament kicks off.
The hosts were the brighter side from the start and took the lead shortly before the 30‑minute mark. Mahmoud Saber finished off a well‑constructed move after Zizo, Egypt’s standout performer on the night, carved open the Nigerian defence and squared the ball for a simple tap‑in.
Nigeria struggled to find rhythm in attack but nearly equalised through a moment of chaos. Paul Onuachu’s long ball forced Yasser Ibrahim into an awkward header that almost resulted in an own goal, only for Mohamed El Shenawy to react sharply and spare his defender.
That scare seemed to jolt the Super Eagles into life, and they soon found their equaliser. A free‑kick from Zaidu Sanusi was driven toward the near post, where El Shenawy failed to gather cleanly, allowing Chidozie Awaziem to nod in from close range.
Egypt regrouped after the interval and quickly regained control. Zizo again provided the spark, creating space inside the box for Mostafa Mohamed, who fired low into the corner to restore the lead.
Nigeria pushed but never truly threatened a second time, and Egypt saw out the match with relative comfort.
The Pharaohs now turn their attention to their AFCON opener against Zimbabwe on Monday, while Nigeria begin their campaign the following day against Tanzania.
