Egypt 2 – 2 Ghana: Kudus’ brace not enough as Black Stars extend winless AFCON run to six games

Mohammed Kudus netted a brace as the Black Stars of Ghana picked up their first point of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2023, from a 2-2 draw with the Pharaohs of Egypt in Group B game on Thursday night.

Kudus produced an inch-perfect finish to put his side ahead in first-half stoppage time and added his second in the second half after Egypt’s Omar Marmoush had cancelled his opener.

The goals were Kudus’ ninth goal and tenth in 26 senior international appearances.

While he helped Ghana avoid a third consecutive AFCON loss, an unwanted feat last recorded in 1984 (also in Ivory Coast), the Black Stars are still winless

in their last six matches, their longest-ever winless run in the competition.

Ghana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde on matchday 1 and the Black Stars have also avoided losing their first two matches in a tournament since 1984, losing to Nigeria and Algeria.

This was the sixth encounter between Egypt and Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations. They have now met four times in the group stages (one win each, two draw and four goals each) and once in the final, which Egypt won in 2010 (1-0).
