Egypt beat Nigerian girls in FIBA U18 Women’s Afrobasket Group C opener

The Egyptian girls defeated their Nigerian counterparts in their opening group C game at the University of Pretoria’s Rembrandt Hall in Pretoria, South Africa on Monday evening.

With their male counterparts still battling with visas into South Africa ahead of their game on Wednesday also against Egypt, the Nigerian girls did not get support that could have boosted their confidence as they lost 72-60.

The Nigerians lost 21-20 and 22-12 in the first two quarters, won the third quarter 16-15 before losing the fourth quarter 14-12.
They will now be aiming to do better against Zimbabwe in their next group game on Thursday before playing Uganda on Sunday. The semifinals for the women’s event will start next week Wednesday.

The teams that finish in the top two places of each group and the two best third-placed teams will advance to the Semi-Finals.
And the finalists will earn the right to represent Africa at next year’s FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in Switzerland.
