Egypt vs Ghana: Black Stars seeking to end unwanted AFCON record of five consecutive winless runs

The Black Stars of Ghana will be looking to get their AFCON 2023 campaign back on track after losing their opening group game to Cape Verde.

The Ghananians will face another stuttering giant, Egypt who needed a Mo Salah penalty in added time to salvage a draw against minnows, Mozambique.

For the Black Stars,this is a must not lose game and a win for them will go a long way in getting them to the first konockout round of the tournament.

More importantly, it will be their first win in their last six AFCON matches.

In fact, Ghana are winless in their last five matches at the Africa Cup of Nations (D2 L3), their longest-ever winless run in the competition. They have lost their last two matches (3-2 vs Comoros in 2022, 2-1 vs Cape Verde on MD 1), never before losing three in a row at AFCON.

For Ghana to end this unwanted record, they need to pay special attention to Liverpool forward, Mo Salah who has netted in his last two appearances against the Black Stars: in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in 2016 and at the 2017 AFCON.

He has scored seven goals at the Africa Cup of Nations for the Pharaohs in total with his first coming against the Black Stars.

Meanwhile, OPta Supercomputer has revealed that Ghana will extend their winless run to six straight games in the competition after giving Egypt 46.7% of winning the game.

This will be the fifth encounter between Egypt and Ghana at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations. They have met three times previously in the group stages (one win each, one draw and two goals each) and once in the final, which Egypt won in 2010 (1-0).

Egypt have won their last two matches against Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations (1-0 in the 2010 final, 1-0 in the 2017 group stages).

The four previous matches between Egypt and Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations have produced only five goals.
