Eko for show!: Lagos dethrones Delta to claim historic victory at 9th National Youth Games
In a seismic shift in Nigeria’s youth sports landscape, Team Lagos emerged as the new champions of the 9th National Youth Games, ending Delta State’s long-standing reign at the top.
The final medal tally crowned Lagos with 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze medals, a performance that stunned the host state and signaled a new era of dominance.
Delta, who had held the title for years, settled for second place with 37 gold, 38 silver, and 39 bronze, while Edo State clinched third with 33 gold, 18 silver, and 28 bronze.
Bayelsa and Kwara rounded out the top five, with 18 and 15 gold medals respectively.
The closing ceremony at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba was a vibrant celebration of youth, unity, and sporting excellence. Cultural performances, musical displays, and a parade of athletes lit up the evening, marking the end of a historic edition of the Games.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), praised the athletes and the event’s impact on national development.
‘What we have witnessed here in Asaba is the triumph of unity, resilience, and youthful potential. These young athletes are the heartbeat of our nation’s future, and the Federal Government remains committed to nurturing their dreams and investing in grassroots sports development,’ Dikko said.
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, expressed pride in hosting the Games and commended the athletes for their discipline and commitment.
‘Delta State is proud to have hosted the 9th National Youth Games, where the nation once again witnessed the strength of Nigerian youth and the power of sports to unite us,’ he said.
