Enekwechi Loses World Lead, Places 3rd as Campbell, Asher-Smith, Williams and Tinch shine at Millrose Games
Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi had to settle for third place in the men’s shot put at the 118th Millrose Games in New York, as Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell produced a world-leading throw to claim victory.
Enekwechi, a multiple African champion, managed 20.63m in the second round, but that was not enough to surpass the early efforts of two-time world champion Joe Kovacs (20.90m) and Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Campbell (20.96m).
Campbell then underlined his dominance with a massive 21.77m effort in the fifth round, improving on his own world lead.
Kovacs responded with 21.21m to secure second place, while Enekwechi’s best remained his second-round throw, earning him a respectable podium finish on his debut at the prestigious indoor meet.
The Nigerian now drops from first to third in the 2026 world list of performances.
Elsewhere, Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith stormed to victory in the women’s 60m with a time of 7.10s, while Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake won the men’s 60m in 6.55s.
Two-time world champion Danielle Williams added another Jamaican triumph by taking the women’s 60m hurdles in 7.90s, and USA’s Cordell Tinch claimed the men’s hurdles crown in 7.52s.
