Enekwechi Returns to Europe with Eyes on Madrid World Indoor Tour Gold Title
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi is set to return to Europe this week as he lines up for the World Indoor Tour Gold Madrid, the fourth stop of the World Athletics circuit at its highest category.
The Nigerian shot putter, fresh from his third-place finish at the Millrose Games in New York, USA, will face familiar rivals in what promises to be a fiercely contested event.
At the Millrose Games, Enekwechi threw behind Jamaican Rajindra Campbell, who won with a then world-leading 21.77m, and two-time world champion and multiple Olympic medalist Joe Kovacs, who managed 21.21m.
Campbell will be in Madrid looking to reclaim the title he won in 2024, when he set the meeting record of 22.16m, while Kovacs will not feature.
Enekwechi enters the competition ranked fifth in the world top list this season, thanks to the 20.82m throw he registered in Poland two weeks ago.
The Nigerian will also face the new world leader, American Jordan Geist, who recently threw 22.04m.
Another major contender is Mexican Uziel Muñoz, the surprise runner-up at the 2025 World Championships, who is aiming to break the 22m barrier for the first time.
Poland’s Konrad Bukowiecki, American Roger Steen, and European medalists Tsanko Arnaudov and Wictor Petersson are also confirmed, making the field one of the strongest of the indoor season.
The World Athletics Indoor Tour rotates its scoring disciplines each year, and for 2026 the men’s shot put is among the Gold-level events.
Athletes earn 10 points for first place, 7 for second, 5 for third, and 3 for fourth, with their best three results counting towards the overall standings.
The discipline winner at the end of the tour will receive a US$10,000 bonus and a wild card entry to the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Kujawy Pomorze later this year.
Enekwechi currently sits fourth in the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold rankings with five points. A victory in Madrid would take his tally to 15, moving him above Kovacs and putting him within striking distance of Campbell, who leads with 17 points, and Geist, who has 10.
