Enekwechi set to storm Zurich to seal spot in Diamond League final

African Shot Put king, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, will be at the Weltklasse Diamond League meeting in Zurich, Switzerland on Thursday where he will get the chance to qualify for his first Diamond League final in Brussels, Belgium next week.

With just two qualification spots left, the Nigerian, fifth in the event’s rankings, only needs to finish not lower than sixth in Zurich to seal a trip to his first Diamond League meeting.

The 31-year-old has garnered 13 points from finishing third in Eugene, fifth in Silesia and sixth in Rome with his nearest challengers for the two spots, Paris 2024 Olympics bronze medalist,
Campbell Rajindra from Jamaica and New Zealander, Tom Walsh six points behind.

Further behind is another New Zealander, Gill Jacko and Nigeria-born American, Josh Awotunde.

Interestingly, three out of the four challengers viz Walsh, Gill and Awotunde will not be in Zurich and this will pave the way for Enekwechi who finished sixth at the Olympics to seal a historic place in the final where he will not only fight for the $30,000 top prize and Diamond trophy on offer but also a wild card to compete in next year’s 20th World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
