Enekwechi storms Lievin, targets another 21m throw for the eighth year in a row
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will be looking to hit the 21m mark for the first time this season and for the eighth year in a row when he files out for the Shot Put event Wednesday at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais Trophée at the Arena Stade Couvert in Liévin, France.
It is a 2025 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold event and the Nigerian, who opened his season with a 20.88m effort at the Atlas Arena in Łódź, Poland on Saturday will be keen to join the 21m class for the new season.
If he succeeds, it will mark the eighth season in a row since the 31-year-old has been hitting the 21m mark.
He started in 2017 when his 21.07m in Cork, Ireland made him the second Nigerian after Stephen Mozia (21.76 PB) to hit the 21m mark. While Mozia did it only in one season, Enekwechi has continued to hit the mark and above since then, culminating in setting him rewriting the Nigerian record twice, first in 2019 when he threw 21.80m and then last year when he was just nine centimetres (21.91m) short of becoming the first Nigerian to hit the 22m mark.
In Lievin, a place where Deji Aliu ran 6.48 seconds to set his still subsisting Nigerian record in the 60m event in 1999, Enekwechi will be hoping for an inspiration.
