Enoh To Sports Federations’ Secretary Generals: Your Loyalty Is To The Sports Ministry!

Sports Minister disregards Sports Federations' constitutions

Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh has told the Secretary Generals of the various Sports Federations that they must ensure that the activities of the Federations serve the best interest of the Ministry and the nation.

Enoh took to his X page to reveal the meeting he had with the Secretary Generals.

‘It was important to meet with Secretaries General of the various National Sports Federations to remind them that they are first all civil servants who represent the Federal Ministry of Sports Development in the various National Sports Federations.

‘To this end, they must ensure that the activities of the Federations serve the best interest of the Ministry and the nation,’ Enoh wrote and told the Secretary Generals that requests for funding of the federations’ activities must align with the goal and vision of the Sports Development Ministry and not that of the international federations under whose rules and guidance the federations operate.

‘In order to galvanize the various teams for maximum productivity, we reminded the secretaries that some requests for funding competitions by some Federations no matter how well intentioned, do not serve the goal and vision of the ministry and was therefore not in sync with national interest, and it is their duty as civil servants to guide the Sports Ministry on the relevant and crucial competitions to be funded.

‘This way, the Sports Ministry and Federations can channel funds appropriately to build the right momentum for major competitions that serve and uplift the nation,’ he further wrote.

Sports analysts believe Enoh’s demand for total loyalty from the chief administrative and accounting officer of Sports Federations operating will be at variance with the constitution of the various federations.

They also feel that the Secretary Generals cannot determine what is good for a Federation since they are expected to carry out decisions made by the board of such a federation in accordance with the constitution of the federations.
