Enugu State Retires Christian Chukwu’s No. 5 Jersey in Historic Tribute
In a heartfelt ceremony held during the Night of Tributes, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State announced the retirement of the legendary No. 5 jersey worn by Christian Chukwu, the late football icon who passed away on April 12 at the age of 74.
Widely known as ‘Chairman,’ Chukwu was celebrated for his commanding presence as a central defender and his leadership on and off the pitch.
He captained both Rangers International and the Nigerian national team, guiding the Super Eagles to their historic Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980. He later served as head coach for both teams, earning admiration for his discipline, humility, and unwavering commitment to Nigerian football.
‘As a fitting tribute to his exploits as a central defender, we will be retiring the iconic number 5 jersey that Chairman Chukwu proudly wore throughout his Rangers career,’ Governor Mbah declared.
In addition to the jersey retirement, Mbah pledged that the Enugu State Government would assume responsibility for the welfare of 109 former Rangers players. He also revealed plans to collaborate with the Federal Government to further immortalize Chukwu’s legacy.
‘Through these steps, future generations will walk paths illuminated by Chukwu’s ideals,’ Mbah said.
Born in Enugu, Chukwu remains one of Nigeria’s most revered football figures, remembered not only for his defensive prowess but also for his enduring impact on the sport and its players.
