EPL Clubs Miss Out as Fenerbahçe Seal €28m Guendouzi Deal

Fenerbahçe have pulled off one of the standout moves of the winter transfer window, officially announcing the signing of French international Matteo Guendouzi from Lazio, a deal that leaves several Premier League clubs empty‑handed.
The 26‑year‑old midfielder, once a rising star at Arsenal and long monitored by English clubs seeking midfield reinforcements, has opted for Istanbul over a return to the Premier League.
Despite interest from multiple EPL sides, Fenerbahçe moved decisively, agreeing a package worth €28 million plus €2 million in bonuses with Lazio.
Guendouzi arrived in Istanbul on Thursday aboard a private jet alongside Fenerbahçe board members and sporting director Devin Özek.
He will undergo medical checks before signing a 4.5‑year contract with an option for a further year.
Guendouzi’s availability had sparked speculation in England, with clubs in mid‑table and those chasing European spots reportedly considering him as a January option.
His Premier League experience, 57 appearances for Arsenal between 2018 and 2020, made him an attractive target. But Fenerbahçe’s financial commitment and clear sporting project proved decisive.
