Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has issued a firm warning to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) amid growing speculation about his future following Nigeria’s early exit from the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Speaking candidly ahead of crucial World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda (September 6 in Uyo) and South Africa (September 9 in Bloemfontein), Chelle made it clear that while he understands the volatile nature of football management, any decision to sack him must come with full financial accountability.
‘I’ve heard the rumors—they want to sack me and bring in someone else,’ Chelle told journalist Osasu Obayiuwana. ‘I know I can be fired after just one match. That’s football. But if they choose to do that, they must be ready to pay out the rest of my contract.’
Chelle, 47, emphasized that his move to Nigeria wasn’t driven by money. In fact, he revealed he earned more in his previous role at Algeria’s MC Oran.
‘I came here for the challenge. Nigeria is a big footballing nation, and I want to achieve something meaningful. That hasn’t changed.’
He also expressed frustration over limited communication with NFF leadership, saying he’s largely been left to operate on his own since taking charge.
Despite the pressure, Chelle remains focused on guiding Nigeria through the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. His current salary is reportedly $50,000 per month.
