Eto’o Sounds Alarm Over CAF’s Credibility After AFCON 2025 U-Turn

The Confederation of African Football’s unprecedented move to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco has sparked widespread controversy across the continent.

Among the strongest reactions is that of Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Football Federation, who has privately expressed alarm at the fallout.

According to L’Équipe, Eto’o has been in contact with several African football leaders, warning of the growing crisis of confidence surrounding CAF.

In his exchanges, the former striker raised pressing questions about the institution’s credibility.

‘How can we restore the confidence of African fans in their CAF? How can we reaffirm our legitimacy without further weakening our institution?’ he reportedly asked.

The decision, taken two months after the final, has been described as grotesque and extremely rare, leaving many baffled and frustrated.

Eto’o’s intervention underscores the wider concern that CAF’s image has been severely damaged, with trust eroding among supporters and officials alike.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe also acknowledged the issue in his remarks on Wednesday, but whether the body can regain confidence remains uncertain.
