Ezra Gunen Calls for Support for Distance Running as MTN CHAMPS Season 4 Returns to Jos
The New Jos Stadium will once again take center stage in Nigerian athletics as MTN CHAMPS Season 4 makes its second stop in the city from March 26 to 28, 2026.
Over 1,300 athletes representing 148 secondary schools and teams will compete, reaffirming Jos’ growing reputation as a hub for grassroots sports development.
At the official press conference heralding the MTN CHAMPS Continental Relays, Professor Ezra Gunen, former Nigerian distance runner and World Athletics certified lecturer, made a passionate appeal for greater investment in long‑distance running.
Gunen emphasized that Plateau athletes, with their natural altitude advantage and proven talent, have the potential to rival East African powerhouses.
‘We appreciate MTN for returning to Jos after such an impactful outing previously. Sports is not forever, education remains key. We want to see athletes who will not only become champions but also professors.
‘But we also appeal for support in developing long‑distance runners, who are among the best in Nigeria and have the potential to compete with athletes from Ethiopia and Kenya,’ Gunen said.
The event drew strong endorsements from Plateau State officials.
Representing the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Musa Ashoms, Permanent Secretary Kenneth T. Buenyen described MTN CHAMPS as ‘a welcome idea’ and praised MTN’s commitment to youth development.
The Commissioner for Education, Hon. Kachollom Pyam Gang, through Mr. Sebastian John, reaffirmed the state’s support, declaring Plateau ‘the home of peace and tourism.’
