‘Failure Is Feedback’: Israel Okon Vows to Learn from NCAA Disappointment

Israel Sunday Okon, the 19-year-old Auburn University sprinter, has vowed to use his latest NCAA Indoor Championships experience as motivation after finishing fifth in the 60m final in Arkansas.

Okon had raised expectations with a lifetime best of 6.48 seconds in the preliminaries, qualifying as the second-fastest man for the final. But he was unable to replicate that form in the decisive race, clocking 6.57 seconds to place fifth.

It was a contrast to his debut at the championships in 2025, when he won bronze in the same event.

Reflecting on his 2026 performance, Okon posted a message on Facebook that struck a determined tone.

‘Failure often shows up right before the breakthrough. It’s not the opposite of success, it’s usually part of the path to it. Failure is feedback, not defeat. Every failure teaches you something success never could. It shows what doesn’t work so you can adjust your strategy and try again smarter,’ he wrote.
