‘Farewell to a Football Professor’: NFF mourns coach Monday Sinclair

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of revered football figure and former Super Eagles coach, Monday Sinclair, who died Wednesday evening.

Nicknamed ‘Professor’ for his unmatched grasp of the game, Sinclair was a pioneer of Nigeria’s post-independence football scene. He later became a cornerstone of grassroots football development, renowned for spotting raw talent and nurturing future stars.

‘We mourn deeply with the immediate family, friends and relatives of ‘Professor’ Monday Sinclair,’ said NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi.

‘It is yet another sad day for Nigerian football. Our prayer is that God brings peace to our grieving hearts and grants the late Sinclair eternal rest.’

Sinclair was instrumental in shaping the careers of Super Eagles legends such as the late Peter Rufai, Taribo West, and Finidi George. His free-flowing style of play and rigorous training methods earned him admiration across the footballing world.

In 1997, he briefly helmed the Super Eagles as interim head coach following the exit of Frenchman Philippe Troussier. On the local scene, his leadership at Sharks FC in Port Harcourt left a legacy of excellence and mentorship that continues to inspire.

The NFF praised Sinclair’s lifelong contributions to Nigerian football, describing him as an “exemplary miner, nurturer, and transformer of talent” whose legacy will endure through generations.
