Fasuba to Okowa: Your track record should disqualify you from seeking re-election

Nigeria’s fastest man in history, Olusoji Fasuba has branded outgoing president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria as visionless and says his track record in the four years he has spent is enough to stop him from seeking re-election.

Okowa has told the media he deserves a second term after boasting one of his greatest achievements as President is sending athletes on scholarships.

Fasuba, who made history in 2008 as the first and, so far, only African man to win a World indoor short sprint title says Okowa seems not to understand what his roles are as President of the AFN.

‘When a leader claims that their greatest achievement is sending athletes abroad on scholarships—rather than developing home-based talent—it reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of what leadership truly entails.

‘A federation leader is entrusted with the responsibility of nurturing local athletes and establishing a sustainable development plan that ensures the long-term growth of the sport within the country.

‘Choosing the easier route of outsourcing development to foreign systems not only weakens our domestic infrastructure but also undermines the potential of countless local talents.

‘This approach is not visionary; it is lazy. It shifts the burden onto others while our own structures remain underdeveloped.

‘Sir, with all due respect, this is a failure of leadership. You have let us down, and such a track record should disqualify you from seeking re-election,’ Fasuba wrote on Facebook.
