FIBA Confirms NBBF Board Mandate Until October 2026
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has formally communicated its position on governance matters within the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), confirming that the current NBBF Board’s mandate will remain valid until 15 October 2026.
In a letter addressed to NBBF President Engr. Ahmadu-Kida Musa and Secretary General Ms. Olabisi Afolabi-Oluwayemi, FIBA outlined the timeline for Nigeria’s basketball leadership transition.
Elections for the NBBF governing bodies must take place after the conclusion of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup on 13 September 2026 and no later than 15 October 2026.
The newly elected Board will assume office on 16 October 2026.
FIBA emphasized that the electoral process must be conducted under the current statutory framework, in full compliance with the FIBA General Statutes and Internal Regulations.
The organization also made clear that it will not recognize any amendments to the NBBF statutes before the elections are completed.
The communication comes against the backdrop of past governance controversies, including Nigeria’s withdrawal from the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup and the disciplinary sanctions imposed on the Federation.
FIBA’s directive seeks to ensure stability and transparency in Nigeria’s basketball administration during this critical period.
The letter, signed by Andreas Zagklis, FIBA Secretary General, was copied to Mr. Anibal Manave, FIBA Africa President, and Mr. Julien Farran, FIBA Executive Director Africa.
