FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifiers: Balogun Shines Again, But D’Tigress Fall to Germany in Villeurbanne
Nigeria fought valiantly but fell short against Germany in their FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament clash in Villeurbanne, France on Tuesday evening.
Despite flashes of brilliance, including a spirited second-quarter surge led by Elizabeth Balogun, the D’Tigress were unable to sustain momentum and eventually succumbed to an 81-73 defeat.
Nigeria’s brightest spell came midway through the second quarter when Balogun’s sharp shooting from deep powered a 10-0 run that flipped a six-point deficit into a four-point lead.
For a brief stretch, the D’Tigress looked in control, forcing Germany onto the back foot. But the Europeans responded with composure, reclaiming the lead before halftime and never relinquishing it again.
The turning point arrived late in the third quarter. Nigeria held a narrow 49-46 advantage, but Germany’s Leonie Fiebich drove to the basket to spark a decisive run.
From that moment, the Germans dictated the pace, punishing Nigeria’s missed opportunities and stretching their lead to double digits in the final period.
Balogun finished as Nigeria’s top scorer with 15 points, including three triples, while her energy helped ignite the team’s best spell of the evening.
