FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup: Flamingos Bow Out After Heavy Defeat to Italy

Nigeria’s Flamingos have exited the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco following a 4-0 loss to Italy in the Round of 16 on Tuesday.

The defeat ends the campaign for the 2022 bronze medalists, while Italy continue their dominant run with four wins in four matches.

The Nigerian side came into the match determined to prove their worth and nearly took the lead in the 24th minute when captain Shakirat Moshood unleashed a powerful shot from the left side of the box, only to be denied by a brilliant save from Italian goalkeeper Matilde Robbioni.

Italy broke the deadlock just before halftime through Anna Copelli, who weaved past the Nigerian defense and calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Sylvia Echefu.

Ten minutes into the second half, Nigeria thought they had equalized when Nguemo Terlumun found the net after a determined effort by Queen Joseph. However, the Video Support Review ruled that Joseph had kicked the ball out of Robbioni’s hands, disallowing the goal.

Italy responded swiftly, with Caterina Venturelli scoring a stunning long range effort three minutes later.

Giulia Robino added a third five minutes after that, and in the 89th minute, Rachelle Giudici’s goal was confirmed by VAR, sealing a comprehensive victory for the Italians.

With the loss, Nigeria’s journey in the tournament comes to an end.
