Focus on Nigeria Olympic Committee after Ghana NOC reveals various grants paid to athletes, Sports Federations in 2024

President of Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Ben Nunoo Mensah has revealed the various grants and amount paid to Ghanaian athletes and Sports Federations for 2024 at the Committee’s Annual General Assembly held last Saturday in Accra, Ghana.

Mensah revealed that the GOC gave a total support of $30,000.00 to all the National Federations selected to take part in the African Games held in Accra in March 2024.

The GOC also revealed that it extended financial support to some National Federations and some athletes through the Olympic Solidarity scholarships and listed the teams, athletes and Federations that received the support.

Football got $13, 572 while Volleyball got $9,000 for Team Support while the GOC also secured grants to support athletes through the Olympic solidarity scholarship scheme with a total of US$72,000 given to athletes on the scholarship scheme with Boxing getting the highest ($18,000) while Athletics, Swimming, Skeleton and Weightlifting got $12,000 each and Judo received$6,000.

Many of the athletes from these Federations got $6,000 while Frimpong Akwasi (Skeleton) received US$12,000.

The GOC further revealed that a total of US$15,000 was given in support to two federations under the Continental Athlete Support grant for participation in various international competitions. Cycling Federation received $10,000.00 and Swimming Federation $5,000.00.

The GOC also offered ANOCA grants to National Federations that took part in the African Games as support towards the Games and other international competitions.

In all, Mensah said the GOC has over the last quadrennial approved and supported National Federations with a total of US$803,250.

These revelations about the availability of these grants have led to calls by Nigerians that the Nigeria Olympic Committee should also disclose how it disbursed these grants while the beneficiary Sports Federations have also been asked to account for such grants.
