Four Nigeria Relay Teams confirmed to battle for Cash and World Championships tickets in Guangzhou
As World Athletics unveils prize money structure for World Relays in May
After an unsuccessful trip to the 20th World indoor championships held in the Chinese City of Tianjing last month, Team Nigeria is set to make another trip to China next month, this time Guangzhou which will be hosting the seventh edition of the World Athletics Relays.
This time, Nigeria will not only be seeking for automatic tickets for as many as four relay events for the 20th World outdoor championships this September in Tokyo, Japan, but also the prize monies on offer after World Athletics unveiled the prize money structure for the event.
The top eight teams in each event will be awarded prize money with first placed relay teams in the men and women 4x100m, 4x400m and the Mixed 4x400m earning $40,000 while second to eighth will earn $20,000, $10,000, $8,000, $6,000, $4,000, $3,000 and $2,000 respectively.
The 4x100m relay teams which will be making its debut at the global stage for the first time next month will earn lower.
The first placed 4x100m team will earn $28,000, $12,000 less than the traditional relay events with second to eighth place finishers earning $14,000, $6000, $5000, $4000, $3000, $2000 and $2000 respectively.
Based on the qualification standard released by World Athletics for the event, the Nigerian men and women’s 4x100m teams, the men’s 4x400m and the Mixed 4x400m relay team have secured automatic tickets to Guangzhou.
Only the women’s 4x400m team is yet to qualify.
According to World Athletics, ‘the top 16 teams in each discipline at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games qualify for entry to the World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 25.
‘The remaining teams (up to 32 in total per event) will be determined through the top lists in the qualification period (1 January 2024 to 13 April 2025).
Meanwhile, the top 14 teams in each of the men’s and women’s 4x100m and 4x400m, plus the mixed 4x400m, will secure their place at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 in September.
The remaining two places in each event will be awarded based on top lists during the qualification period (25 February 2024 to 24 August 2025).
