Fraser-Pryce impresses again with 10.83 in Madrid, Chukwuebuka third in Shot Put

Five-time world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce sped to another sub 10.90 performance to win the 100m event at the Meetind de Madrid on Saturday in Madrid.

The Jamaican ran 10.83 to set a new meeting record on her way to victory at the meeting. It was another strong performance from the 36 year old who ran her
first race in 10 months at the Spitzen Leichtathletik meet in Luzern, Switzerland last week.

Fraser-Pryce ran 10.82 at the meeting is bettered only by three sprinters so far this year viz Marie-Josee Ta Lou (10.75), Sha’Carri Richardson (10.71) and
her compatriot Shericka Jackson who tops the world list with the 10.65 she ran at the Jamaican championships a forthnight ago.

The Jamaican is certainly back in the mix and will be looking to become the first woman to win the blue ribband title at three straight World Championships and a record extending sixth win in the event.

She won her first title in 2009 in Berlin but came fourth two years later in Daegu, South Korea.

Fraser-Pryce reclaimed the title in 2013 in Moscow and successfully defended it in Bejing two years later. She was off the scene in 2017 but returned in 2019 to reclaim the title she relinguished without a fight two years earlier.

The 36 year old made a successful title defence in 2022 in Oregon and will now be looking for a third straight win for the first time.

In the Shot Put, Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi threw 21.30m to place third behind Rajindra Campbell of Jamaica (22.22m) and Roger Steen of the United States of America (21.33m).

The Nigerian will be looking forward to making the final eight in his event for the second time at the World Championships next month. He was in the last eight on his debut in Doha in 2019 but was ranked 11th last year in Oregon.
