Gabrielle Thomas: London Diamond League win makes me feel confident going into Paris 2024 Olympics
At 27, Gabrielle Thomas knows Paris 2024 Olympics offers her one of the best opportunities to claim a global, individual title after her Olympic bronze in 2021 and World Athletics Championships’ silver last year.
The American ran an impressive 21.82 meeting record to win the 200m event at the London Diamond League on Saturday afternoon ahead of Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia (21.86) and home girl, Dina Asher-Smith (22.07).
A delighted Thomas who owns the world lead at 21.78 says the race has renewed her hope for Paris 2024 Olympics.
‘I feel really good. It’s made me feel confident going into the Paris Games after that one. All things considered, hopping off the plane and coming into this stadium with all these people was a really good race for me.
‘This crowd is incredible, it’s got to be my favorite Diamond League – it’s just so fun. The crowd is incredible, the stadium is incredible and it’s so well run. I’m so happy to be here, this was a great experience,’ she said post race.
Alfred is however not putting any pressure on herself as she is set to make her debut at the Games.
‘I don’t know what to think! I felt strong in the race. I’m going back to Monocco to train and then I’m off to Paris. I’d love to get a medal in both, but most importantly I just want to have fun. It’s my first Games so having fun is important,’ she said.
