Ghana to Host African Youth Junior Weightlifting Championships in 2025

The Nigerian weightlifters, both junior and senior, will be busy next year with two competitions holding within the African continent.

The juniors will be in Ghana in August for the African Youth Junior Weightlifting Championships after the west African country won the right to host the event.

It will from August 15-22, 2025, in Accra.

Ghana put in the bid to host the youth championship and after an Executive Board meeting of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa and subsequent approval from the WFA Congress on November 11, 2024, Ghana was announced as the host for the event.

The country has enjoyed massive equipment support from the WFA after hosting the 13th African Games which placed Ghana in a better position to now host continental championships.

Before that, the seniors will be in Cote D’Or, Moka, Mauritius in April for the Senior Weightlifting Championships for men and women.

Meanwhile, the International Weightlifting Federation, IWF, at its Ordinary Congress meeting held on last month in Manama, Bahrain approves new eight body-weight categories for men and women junior and senior age groups as following:

Men Junior and Senior age groups: 60 kg, 65 kg, 71 kg, 79 kg, 88 kg, 98 kg, 110 kg and +110 kg.

Women Junior and Senior age groups: 48 kg, 53 kg, 58 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg, 77 kg, 86 kg and +86 kg.

These new body-weight categories will be implemented from June 2025.
