Gift Orban Faces Racist Abuse After Serie A Red Card

Nigerian striker Gift Orban was at the center of controversy in Serie A after receiving a straight red card during Hellas Verona’s 2-1 defeat to Parma over the weekend.

The dismissal came in the 11th minute when Orban protested a challenge from Enrico Del Prato in the center circle. While carrying the ball forward, Orban appeared to be pulled back by his opponent, but the referee waved play on.

Angered by the decision, the Super Eagles invitee confronted the official, who promptly showed him a red card.

As Orban walked off the pitch, reports emerged that sections of Parma supporters directed racist abuse at the 23-year-old. The incident sparked outrage, with a social media account bearing Orban’s name later criticizing the referee’s decision and highlighting the challenges faced by Black players in Italy.

The post read: ‘Sent off for protesting a decision. As a Black player in Italy, I can’t ignore how often we’re treated differently. I love the game, and all I ask for is fairness, respect, and equal treatment on the pitch.’

However, Hellas Verona quickly issued a statement distancing the player from the comments, clarifying that the account in question does not belong to Orban.

The club reaffirmed its support for the striker, who has been in strong form since joining in the summer, scoring seven goals and providing two assists in 22 league appearances.
