Godson Oghenebrume pulls out of World Athletics Championships!

Sprinter,Godson Oghenebrume has pulled out of the WorldAthletics Championships scheduled to start later this month in Budapest, Hungary.

The 20 year old who helped Nigeria 4x100m relay team qualify for the championships and was scheduled to run in the 100m event albeit he was not at the selection trials held last month in Benin city, Edo state took to his twitter page to announce his withdrawal.

‘I want to thank everyone who supported me. This is a hard decision for me but with much consideration I’ve decided to
focus on getting healthy for next year, with that being said I will not be competing at Budapest this august. Lastly I will
be coming back to the bayou next year,’ wrote @brume_godson.

Oghenbrume’s withdrawal will be a big blow to Nigeria’s aspiration to win a 4x100m relay medal for the first time since
1997.

He ran a 9.90 lifetime best over the 100m on his way to winning the silver medal at the 2023 NCAA outdoor championships
last June.

The time, the fastest run by a Nigerian since Divine Oduduru ran 9.86 in 2019 is also the third fastest by a Nigerian over
the distance behind Olusoji Fasuba and Oduduru.

Oghenebrume’s withdrawal will now pave way for the Athletics Federation of Nigeria to register Ushoritse Itshekiri and Seye
Ogunlewe, who finished first and second respectively at the Nigerian championships, for the 100m event in Budapest.

It is believed AFN officials, especially its Prsident, Tonobok Okowa, who is from the same state as Oghenebrume (Delta)
will try to persuade the athlete to change his mind and join the team going to Budapest.
