Gusau: Super Falcons’ WAFCON glory to inspire Super Eagles’ World Cup push
President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has praised the Super Falcons’ dramatic comeback victory over Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), calling it a powerful symbol of the Nigerian spirit—and a source of inspiration for the men’s national team as they pursue qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking after watching the final live at the Stade Olympique in Rabat, Gusau expressed elation over the 3–2 victory, which saw Nigeria overturn a 2–0 first-half deficit to clinch their record 10th continental title.
‘I am very happy because our girls rose from the ‘dead’ and fought to victory,’ Gusau said. ‘This was an extraordinary performance. I congratulate them for their resilience, doggedness, patriotism and the blatant display of the Nigerian spirit.’
He added that the comeback victory will serve as a motivational metaphor for the Super Eagles, who face a tough race to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
‘We have four more matches to turn the table in our World Cup qualifying campaign. Watching the Super Falcons tonight reminds us that in sport, and in life, it is never over until it is over.’
Gusau applauded the Falcons for netting 14 goals and conceding just three across six matches. Their redemption was particularly sweet, having defeated all three sides that beat them in the 2022 tournament—Zambia, South Africa, and Morocco—with commanding scorelines and dominant performances.
‘What is left now is for us to aim higher—conquering the world at the FIFA Women’s World Cup,’ Gusau declared.
