‘I Now Have the Idea of What to Work On’: Says Tebogo after 200m loss to Lyles in Monaco

Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo admitted disappointment after finishing second to Noah Lyles at the Herculis EBS Meeting in Monaco, the 10th leg of the 2025 Wanda Diamond League. Tebogo clocked 19.97 seconds, just behind Lyles’ winning time of 19.88 seconds, in a race that marked the American’s return to competition after injury.

Tebogo, who had dominated the Eugene Diamond League with a world-leading 19.76, was candid about the challenges he faced in Monaco:

‘First of all, I am disappointed in my performance. It came a long way. Back in the Call Room where they called us in earlier than expected so I did not do my whole warm-up. But that is not an excuse. All of us came and showed up.’

Despite the setback, the Botswanan star remained focused on growth and preparation for future events.

‘I now have the idea of what to work on… I am always on the game, that is why I sometimes look serious.’

Lyles also reflected on his own comeback and the significance of racing against Tebogo:

‘I put myself in the fire for that one coming back against Tebogo. I didn’t feel any pressure… I pray for times like this to be out here and do what I love.’

With Lyles heading to the London Diamond League next and Tebogo sharpening his focus, the sprint rivalry is set to intensify as the road to the World Championships continues.
