Iheanacho gets 10 games to score first goal in 2024, benched for the third game in a row for Sevilla

Kelechi Iheanacho was left to watch from the substitutes bench for the entire duration of his club, Sevilla’s 2-0 win at Espanyol on Friday night.

It was the third time in a row and fifth time overall the Super Eagle will be left as an unused substitute in the 10 games the club has played in the LaLiga. He missed the first game due to transfer paperwork.

Iheanacho has thus been denied the chance to score his first goal across all competitions at club and national team levels so far this calendar year.

The last time the 28-year-old found the back of the net was in October last year when he netted in Leicester City’s 3-1 at Swansea City in a Sky Bet Championship game.

He has provided just one assist in 2024 and that was in the 1-0 extra time defeat of Bournemouth at the Vitality stadium in a FA Cup fifth round game.

The Nigerian now has 10 games to save his 2024 calendar year from ending without scoring a goal.

He will hope to play a part and score on Wednesday when Sevilla play Las Rozas in a Copa Del Rey game. He also has seven LaLiga games to play in the remaining weeks in 2024 with the visit of Sevilla to the Santiago de Bernabeu where they will face Real Madrid with just three days to Christmas.

He will also have the two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying games against the Cheetahs of Republic of Benin and the Amavubi of Rwanda to salvage his year if he gets invited.
