Incredible Tebogo makes Olympic history as first African man to win 200m gold

Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo has made history as the first African man to win a short sprint gold medal at the Olympics.

The 21 year old ran incredible 19.46, a new African record and fourth fastest in the all-time list to emerge the fastest 200m runner in the world in 2024.

Tebogo’s incredible feat is coming 28 years after an African last made the podium in the event and the 100m. Frankie Fredericks ran 19.68 and was beaten to the gold by Michael Johnson’s 19.32 then world record.

The same feat befell Fredericks in the 100m when he was beaten by another 9.84 world record run by Canadian, Donovan Bailey.

28 years after, Tebogo has done what the Namibian could not do and he did it in a record smashing record, beating his own 19.50 African record which he ran at the Olympic stadium in London in July 2023.
