Iwobi and Bassey fail to equal Efan Ekoku’s Premier League record

Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey failed to prove the heroes for Fulham like they did in February when they score the two goals that gave the Cottagers their first win against Manchester United at Old Trafford in 20 years.

The duo could not recreate that scenario on Friday night as Fulham succumbed to a late goal to lose their opening game of the 2024/2025 Premier League season.

The two Nigerians were also in the hunt to become who would become the second Nigerian in Premier League history, after Efan Ekoku, to score in the opening game of a Premier League season.

Ekoku netted on five minutes for Wimbledon in their 3-2 defeat of Bolton Wanderers at Selhurst Park in the opening game of the 1995/1996 Premier League season.

Ekoku will now keep the record for another one season.
