Iwobi closes in on equaling assists record in a Premier League season by a Nigerian

Alex Iwobi may have had his chance of becoming the 10th Nigerian player to score at least 10 goals in a Premier League season delayed after he fired blanks against Southampton on Saturday but the 28-year-old moved closer to equaling the number of assists he provided in the 2022/23 Premier League season.
The former Arsenal man bagged an assist in the game at St Mary’s stadium. It was his fifth in 15 appearances against Southampton in the Premier League.
It is also his sixth of the season which means he is just one assist away from equaling the seven he provided in the 2022/23 season which is a record he holds with Peter Osaze Odemwingie in a Premier League season.
Odemwingie bagged seven assists in 32 appearances in the 2010/11 season to set the record which Iwobi equaled three seasons ago in 38 games.
Iwobi also extended his record as the Nigerian with the most Premier League assists of all time with his 35th.
he Nigerian has four more games to join either equal the record or break it as well as join that exclusive club of bonafide Nigerians who scored at least 10 goals in a Premier League season.
Saturday’s game was Iwobi’s 40th game of the season for Fulham across all competitions.
He has now featured in 40 or more games in a season for the third time in the 10 seasons he has spent in England.
He played 51 games for Arsenal in the 2018/19 season with 35 of the games in the Premier League and 11 in the Europa League. He scored six times and provided nine assists across all competitions.
In the 2022/23 season, he featured in 41 games for Everton, including all 38 games in the Premier League. He scored just twice but provided eight assists.
This season, he has now featured in 40 games with 34 coming in the Premier League, four in the FA Cup and two in the EFL Cup. He has however scored nine times.
