Iwobi, Iheanacho looking to join Super Eagles stars who scored in opening day league games

Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho will get their season off the ground on Friday in England and Spain respectively with both looking to join an elite group of Nigerian players who have scored for their clubs in the opening league game of a season.

Odion Ighalo, Nwankwo Kanu, Taiwo Awoniyi are just a few of Nigerian players who scored in their clubs opening game of the season with Awoniyi the last to do it in the Premier League, scoring Nothingham Forest’s goal in their 2-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates stadium last season.

Iwobi and his Nigerian compatriot, Calvin Bassey will be at Old Trafford Friday night hoping to score for the second visit in a row after netting the goals that gave Fulham a 2-1-win in February with the former Arsenal star scoring a last-minute goal after Harry Maguire looked to have saved a point for the Red Devils with his 89th minute goal that cancelled out Bassey’s 65th minute opener.

This time around, Iwobi will be hoping to change position with Bassey by scoring the first goal for Fulham and hopes it will be the first goal of the season to become the first Nigerian to score the first goal of the opening game of a Premier League season.

Iwobi will also be seeking to move clear of Nwankwo Kanu as the Nigerian player that has provided the most assists in Premier League history.

The 28-year-old has bagged 29 assists in 253 appearances, same as Kanu who bagged his in 273 appearances.
In Spain, Iheanacho will also be eager to score in the opening league game for his club for the first time after doing so for Leicester City in the 1-0 Community Shield defeat of Manchester City.

The 27-year-old is campaigning in the LaLiga and will love to also make a scoring debut for his club, Sevilla who are away at Las Palmas Friday evening.
