Iwobi Plots European Football Return After Six-Year Absence

Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has declared his ambition to return to European competition, six years after his last appearance on the continental stage.

The Nigerian international, who enjoyed a career-best goalscoring season last term, has identified qualification for the Europa Conference League as a key target for the club’s 2025/26 campaign.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Iwobi emphasized the hunger within the squad to build on last season’s near miss and secure a top-ten finish that could open the door to Europe.

‘Everyone wants to play in Europe. I’ve played in Europe before — I want a taste of it again,’ said Iwobi. ‘Last season was a stepping stone. This season, we want to go further.’

Iwobi, who came through Arsenal’s academy and featured in European fixtures alongside Mesut Özil, Santi Cazorla, and Alexis Sánchez, reflected on how those formative years continue to shape his approach to the game.

‘I was blessed to come through an Arsenal team with Özil, Cazorla, Alexis. The style of play at Fulham now is close to what I had back then — the system, the structure, how we want to play.’

Now a senior figure in Marco Silva’s side, Iwobi praised the manager’s influence both on and off the pitch, crediting Silva’s open-door policy and emotional investment in the team as key factors in his resurgence.

‘Marco is emotional, he fights for the team. But off the pitch, he’s easy-going. He always tells me, ‘When you’re happy, you play your best football.’’

Iwobi also voiced his support for Fulham’s record signing Emile Smith Rowe, urging patience and consistency as the young midfielder looks to make his mark in SW6.

‘Everyone knows Emile’s qualities. He just needs to stay fit — then you’ll see the best of him.’

The former Gunner added that he would welcome a return for Reiss Nelson, another Arsenal product, who has been linked with a move back to Fulham.

‘Reiss is explosive, very sharp. I hope he comes back fit and healthy. I can try to be an agent — but I’m not!’

With Fulham’s squad growing in confidence and cohesion, Iwobi believes the club is ready to take the next step. Six years after his last European appearance, the midfielder is determined to lead the charge back to the continental stage — this time in black and white.
