Iyaye Promises Bigger, Better Niger Delta Games in 2026
The Executive Director of Finance and Administration of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Alabo Boma Iyaye, has assured that the 2026 edition of the Niger Delta Games will surpass the success of the inaugural edition held earlier this year.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Main Organising Committee (MOC) and Local Organising Committee (LOC) for Edo 2026 at the NDDC Head Office in Port Harcourt, Iyaye praised the efforts of committee members who were largely retained after delivering what he described as a ‘one-of-its-kind’ Games in Uyo, Akwa Ibom last April.
Iyaye reflected on the impact of the first edition, noting that it brought joy and unity to the Niger Delta region while showcasing talents beyond oil production.
He emphasized that the Games provided opportunities for young people to shine and empowered them through sport. Charging the committees to build on that foundation, he declared that the 2026 edition would not only be bigger but would also achieve the broader objectives of youth engagement and talent development.
The 23-man MOC is co-chaired by Iyaye and Project Consultant Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, with Sports Commissioners from all nine NDDC states and seasoned sports technocrats included.
Bayelsa State’s Commissioner for Sports, Olympic gold medallist Daniel Igali, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, said the NDDC had taken the lead in sports development, setting a pace that other regions are struggling to match. He expressed optimism that the second edition would be more memorable and continue to promote the aspirations of Niger Deltans.
In his vote of thanks, Ikpokpo applauded the NDDC’s support, promising that the Games would produce Nigeria’s next champions. He revealed that 17 sports would be contested in Edo 2026 and assured that measures had been put in place to curb cheating and prevent athlete buying, ensuring only homegrown talents represent their states.
The second Niger Delta Games will take place from February 20 to 27, 2026, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City and other top sporting facilities across Edo State.
