Jefferson-Wooden Runs 10.76 to Dominate in Brussels but Hints at Skipping Diamond League Final
Melissa Jefferson-Wooden delivered a commanding performance at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme in Brussels, clocking a blistering 10.76 seconds to win the women’s 100m and extend her unbeaten streak this season.
Yet despite securing qualification for the Diamond League Final in Zurich, the American sprint star’s post-race comments suggest she may opt out of the season-ending showdown.
In what was her first-ever race in Brussels, Jefferson-Wooden expressed deep appreciation for the atmosphere and support she received, calling the experience ‘full of love.’
However, her focus appears to be shifting toward the World Championships in Tokyo, where she intends to peak.
‘Right now I’m going back home to the States to get some good trainings in and clean up the small things,’ Jefferson-Wooden said. ‘It’s all about putting together the perfect race at the perfect time, when it matters the most, and that is at the World Championships in Tokyo.’
Her remarks have sparked speculation that she may skip the Diamond League Final despite being one of the top qualifiers.
Jefferson-Wooden has produced the four fastest times of her career this season, including a world-leading 10.65 at the U.S. Championships. Her win in Brussels saw her finish ahead of Sha’Carri Richardson (11.08), Daryll Neita (11.15), and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (11.17), reinforcing her status as a gold medal contender on the global stage.
