June 2024 FIFA Ranking: Super Eagles predicted to drop eight places to 38

The Super Eagles are projected to drop eight places when the next FIFA ranking is released on June 20, 2024, according to Nigeria’s most authoritative sports daily, Complete Sports.

The Nigeria senior national dropped two places from 28 to 30 when the ranking was updated by FIFA in April but Finidi George and his men are now projected to drop to 38th in the world and fifth in Africa.

The drop may not be unconnected with the team’s humiliating performances in the two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying games against South Africa which ended 1-1 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state and the first ever loss (2-1) to the Cheetahs of Benin Republic who played away from home in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

This would be Nigeria’s lowest ranking since December 2023 when the team was ranked 42nd best in the world and sixth in Africa.

While Morocco is projected to remain Africa’s highest ranked team and 13th in the world, Senegal dropped one place from 17th to 18th in the world albeit the Teranga Lions still retain the number two spot in Africa.

Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire have however been projected to move above Nigeria with the Pharaohs now projected to be ranked third in Africa and 36th in the world while reigning African champion, the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire are projected to be fourth in Africa while moving a step up to 37th in the world.

The Cheetahs are projected to move six places up to 91 in the world and 19th in Africa with South Africa projected to remain 59th in the world and 10th in Africa.

Argentina, France and Belgium are projected to remain first, second and third respectively while Brazil is projected to move above England into fourth with the Three Lions dropping to fifth.
