Juventus Vs Napoli: Osimhen seeking to move past Eto’o, eyes Weah’s goal record
Victor Osimhen will be seeking to become the top African goal scorer in a single Serie A season and the all-time African goal scorer when he files out for Napoli against Juventus on Sunday in a matchweek 31 fixture at the Allianz Stadium stadium in Turin.
The Nigerian has scored 21 goals in 24 Serie A games so far this season to make him the top Nigerian goal scorer in a single season in the Italian topflight and joint African top scorer with Cameroun legend, Samuel Eto’o.
Eto’o netted 21 times in 35 games in the 2010/11 season for Inter Milan and Osimhen needs just a goal to go above the Camerounian and draw him level with George Weah as the top-scoring African in the history of the competition.
Osimhen, 24, has scored 45 times in the 75 games he has played for Napoli since he made his debut in the Serie A in September 2020, one less than Weah who scored 46 times in 114 appearances for AC Milan.
The Nigerian can break that record at the Allianz stadium on Sunday if he replicates the two goals he scored in the 5-1 annihilation of the Old Lady in their first meeting in the competition last January at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Osimhen is also in line to become the first African to end a Serie A season as top scorer. Overall, the former Lille of France forward has scored 54 times in 93 appearances across all competitions for Napoli.
