Kanu Counters Oliseh, Says ‘We’re Proud of Super Eagles Performance’ in Morocco
Two-time African Footballer of the Year, Nwankwo Kanu, has expressed pride in the Super Eagles’ performance at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, countering criticism from his former teammate Sunday Oliseh.
Although Nigeria fell short of winning the tournament, the team secured a bronze medal after defeating Egypt on penalties in the third-place playoff.
Kanu was captured in a viral video celebrating the victory with the players inside the locker room, a gesture that highlighted his admiration for their efforts.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s campaign, the Arsenal legend praised the team’s resilience and urged them to keep improving.
‘We got the third place, we are proud of the boys. If you look at the team and the way we played, you can see that it is a strong performance and solid team. Penalties you can’t really tell as a footballer. I’m happy they keep improving every day,’ Kanu said.
He added: ‘That’s the most important thing. So we go back to the drawing board and we will do what we have to do.’
Kanu’s remarks came in response to Oliseh, who had earlier condemned the team’s celebrations, describing them as ‘mediocrity.’
Oliseh argued that Nigeria’s decline began when the team became content with bronze medals, insisting that the Super Eagles should aim higher to reclaim their dominance in African football.
