Karlsruhe Indoor Meet: Mihambo leaps back to the top of the World list, Ogunleye drops to fourth
Two-time and 2021 Olymic gold medalist, Malaika Mihambo of Germany leapt back to the top of the world long jump list Friday at the Europahalle in Karlsruhe, one of the World Athletics indoor tour gold events.
The 31-year-old leapt a massive 7.07m on her fourth attempt after her failure to record any mark in her opening jump and a rather mediocre 6.08m in the second.
She skipped the third before leaping farthest in the event to set a new meeting record and regain her number one status in the world so far this year.
Mihambo opened her season with 6.79m in Dortmund last month to move to the top of the world list but was later supplanted by Anthaya Charlton of the Bahamas who leapt a distance of 6.98m at the Randal Tyson Indoor Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas at the end of January.
In the Shot Put, reigning Olympic champion, Yemisi Ogunleye dropped from second to fourth in the 2025 world list after her indifferent performance, throwing a 19.49m fourth round best to finish fifth behind reigning World indoor champion, Sarah Mitton of Canada who threw 20.68m to snatch the win from two-time World outdoor champion, Jackson Chase of the USA who thought she was cruising after hitting the first 20m of the season.
Her 20.06m first round throw was never bettered until the final round while Schilder Jessica of the Netherlands threw 19.72m in the first round to finish third, ahead of Ogunleye who failed to inspire confidence with her 19.03m and 18.86m throws in the first two rounds.
