Kipyegon, Duplantis set to end 2023 as highest ranked athletes
World 1500m and 5000m champion, Faith Kipyegon and Pole Vault King, Mondo Duplantis will end 2023 as the highest ranked woman and man respectively.
Kipyegon has clearly been the best woman athlete in the outgoing year, winning an unpreceented 1500m and 5000m double at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in Hungary and the Diamond League 1500m title in Oregon, USA.
The 29 year old two time Olympics and four times World champion did not just break three world records in three separate events, she also became the first woman to run inside 3:50 in the 1500m.
This would be the first time the Kenyan will be ranked the number one woman athlete in the world after coming fourth in 20202 and ninth last year.
Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson and Dutch flying woman, Femke Bol will end the year as the second and best ranked women respectively.
Duplantis is however not new to being the number one man in the year and will end 2023 as the best man for the second successive year.
The Swedish has been the most dominant figure in the Pole Vault since the era of Sergey Bubka ended and has set the world Pole Vault record seven times the last of which came at the Diamond League final in Oregon where he soared to a height 6.23m.
Shot Putter, Ryan Crouser will end as the second best while Noah Lyles will be the number three man in 2023.
