Lagos Scouts Future Stars Ahead of 2025 Youth Games
The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has officially kicked off its ‘Catch-Them-Young’ multi-sports trials, a bold grassroots initiative aimed at identifying and nurturing young athletic talent ahead of the 9th National Youth Games (NYG), scheduled to hold from August 29 to September 6, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State2.
The programme targets children aged 9 to 14 across Lagos State, with trials taking place at various sporting facilities. The goal is to build a pipeline of future champions who will not only represent Lagos at the NYG but also compete nationally and internationally in years to come.
The trials span a wide range of disciplines, including Track and field, Swimming, Gymnastics, Deaf sports, Boxing, Weightlifting, Table tennis, Badminton, Basketball, Football, Chess, Ayo
and more.
Speaking at the track and field trials held on Wednesday, Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the LSSC, underscored the strategic importance of early talent discovery.
‘The ‘Catch-Them-Young’ programme represents our commitment to discovering and nurturing raw talent from the grassroots level,’ Fatodu said.
‘We believe every child in Lagos has the potential to become a world champion. Through this comprehensive trial system, we’re creating pathways for young athletes to transform their dreams into reality.’
Fatodu also revealed that the Commission is in talks with international sports development organizations to provide advanced training and exposure for standout athletes.
The initiative includes training camps, strict adherence to age eligibility rules, and a focus on sports where Lagos has historically excelled—while also exploring new areas of potential.
This programme aligns with Lagos State’s long-term vision for youth sports development, reinforcing its reputation as a national leader in grassroots talent grooming.
