Lampard Hails Onyeka’s ‘Outstanding Debut’ in Coventry City Victory

Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has praised Frank Onyeka for his commanding display on debut in the club’s 3-1 Championship victory over Middlesbrough on Monday night.

Onyeka, who joined Coventry on loan from Brentford last winter, featured for 75 minutes at the Coventry Building Society Arena and impressed in midfield despite Haji Wright stealing the spotlight with a hat-trick.

Lampard described the Nigerian international’s performance as ‘outstanding,’ highlighting his energy, ball-winning ability, and composure.

‘His performance, his power in winning the ball, his quality of understanding when to jump and press, and what he’s like in duels, but also his quality of play,’ Lampard told BBC Coventry and Warwickshire.

The Super Eagles star was booked in the 27th minute, but Lampard insisted the caution was harsh.

‘It was a massive performance from him, and he gets a booking—it’s never a booking. I thought he dealt with that situation well,’ he said.

Lampard added that Onyeka’s seamless transition from the Premier League to the Championship was a positive sign for the club.

‘An outstanding debut. To come from the Premier League and step up to this level of game so quickly, to make his debut in that game and perform as he did, was a great sign. I am really pleased for him.’

Coventry are expected to sign Onyeka permanently from Brentford if they secure promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season.
