Lampard Sweats on Onyeka Fitness Ahead of Bristol Clash

Frank Lampard has provided a fitness update on Frank Onyeka ahead of Coventry City’s trip to Bristol City this weekend.

The Nigerian midfielder, who joined on loan from Brentford in January, was undergoing a fitness test after picking up a knock in last weekend’s win over Stoke and suffering fatigue from a demanding run of fixtures.

Lampard confirmed that Onyeka had not trained much during the week but was due to return to training on Friday, leaving his availability for Saturday’s clash at Ashton Gate uncertain.

‘He hasn’t trained much this week but he’s due to train today, so we’ll see how he is for tomorrow,’ Lampard explained.

Pressed further, he added: ‘Yeah, we’ll see how he is out there.’

Victor Torp is the most likely replacement if Onyeka is not fit to start, but Lampard was quick to underline the impact the Nigerian has made since arriving.

He praised Onyeka’s professionalism, Premier League experience, and influence both on and off the pitch, noting that his presence has helped lift the team’s performances in recent weeks.

‘He’s been great for us and it’s nice to see that link with the fans who respect a player who gives everything for the team,’ Lampard said, adding that Onyeka’s know-how has been invaluable in a squad relatively light on Premier League exposure.
