Lookman Cleared for La Liga Debut After Registration Confirmation

Ademola Lookman has officially been registered by La Liga, clearing the way for the Nigerian forward to make his league debut for Atletico Madrid when they host Real Betis at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday.

Confirmation of his eligibility came late Thursday night or early Friday morning, when his name appeared on La Liga’s official squad list. Earlier checks had not included the 27-year-old, suggesting his registration was completed only hours before.

The clearance follows his dazzling Copa del Rey debut on Thursday, where Lookman scored and provided an assist in Atletico’s 5-0 demolition of Betis in Seville.

La Liga’s registration process is more than a formality. Clubs must comply with strict financial fair play rules and salary cap regulations before new signings can be added to the official squad list.

This ensures that contracts are valid, wages sustainable, and squad quotas respected. Without registration, players cannot feature in league matches, even if they have already played in other competitions.

Lookman’s swift clearance highlights Atletico’s financial flexibility, contrasting with the case of fellow Nigerian Kelechi Iheanacho, who faced delays after joining Sevilla in 2024.

Iheanacho’s registration was held up due to wage bill restrictions, with Sevilla forced to adjust their finances before La Liga approved his inclusion.

For Atletico, Lookman’s availability is a timely boost. His pace, creativity, and directness impressed in his debut, and fans will be eager to see him replicate that form in front of the home crowd as the capital club continues its push in La Liga.
