Lookman gets first goal, assist on third UEFA Champions League attempt; makes Atalanta history
Ademola Lookman has joined a long list of Nigerian players who have scored in the UEFA Champions League after he fired in his first goal in his third appearance in the competition.
The Nigerian netted Atalanta’s second goal of the night in the Bergamo side’s trip to the VELTINS-Arena, formerly Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen in Germany where Ukrainian side, Shakhtar Donetsk play their home games in the competition following the Ukraine vs Russia war.
He scored on 44 minutes after he had assisted Berat Djimsiti to put Atalanta ahead in the 21st minute and in the process made history as only the second player in the history of the Serie A side who has both scored a goal and provided an assist in the same UEFA Champions League match, after Duván Zapata (twice).
Lookman has now become the 40th Nigerian to score in the history of the competition. The goal has also increased his total haul to eight in 30 games across all European club competitions.
He has also increased his total goal haul for Atalanta to 35 and his assists to 22 in 84 games across all competitions and across over two seasons.
Obafemi Martins and Victor Osimhen are the top scoring Nigerians in the history of the competition with nine goals each in 34 and 17 appearances respectively.
